American Airlines has announced yet another additional charge for in-flight extras. Soon pillows and blankets will only be supplied to passengers who choose to pay for them, similar to the new policy for the in-flight meal. The major US carrier is heading down the same avenue as so many other airlines have been forced to go during the recent economic downturn. Many airlines have adopted this approach in an attempt to cut back costs and curb lost revenue.
The airline announced that changes would begin going into affect starting May 1st and would apply to all flights lasting longer than two hours. Currently, the airline does not hand out blankets and pillows on flights that last under two hours. It is only applicable to economy class, as premium and first class passengers will continue to enjoy the complementary service.
The charge will be $8 per passenger for a pillow and blanket set, and although the passenger will pay to use them, the passengers are still unable to take them home. The airline will add the incentive of a $10 voucher for passengers who spend $30 or more at any participating Bed, Bath & Beyond retailer.
American Airlines is not the first carrier by any means to begin charging for extra perks such as pillows, blankets, and in-flight drinks. Jet Blue and US Airways have implemented similar new policies for bedding and meals. Across the globe, charging for goods on the flight are becoming the norm as carriers begin to adopt this new trend. Southwest Airlines last year, in an attempt to curb the spread of swine flu, removed their blankets entirely.
