Leading car hire company Hertz has announced that it will be expanding its car club fleet in London with the addition of two Mitsubishi i-MiEVs which run entirely on electric power.
The brand new vehicles will be available to rent through Hertz’s Connect scheme for £4 per hour. Drivers choosing the all-electric cars will be able to recharge them at any of the rental firm’s 16 charging stations positioned throughout the city.
In addition, Hertz intends to introduce a Nissan LEAF to its Connect fleet in the capital sometime in the near future and will be adding electric vehicles from Renault’s range after they come onto the market in the new year.
The rental firm has also said that Connect fleets which are available to university students and corporate customers will have electric powered vehicles added to them as well as a network of charging stations.
Mark Frissora, Hertz’s chairman and chief executive, said making electric vehicles available to Connect customers in the US on an hourly basis had proved extremely popular with members. He added that he was excited by the prospect of making a range of electric driving solutions available to Connect customers in London and across the UK.
One of the first corporate Connect customers to offer electric vehicles to its employees will be PwC. The firm will offer two vehicles from its offices in Southwark and Westminster. Charging electric cars in the capital will become easier when 1,300 charging points are made public in 2013.
