Resorts around the United Kingdom are expecting huge crowds over this bank holiday. Scarborough, which is the third most popular British tourist destination, is enjoying a massive influx of holidaymakers, as staycationers choose to make their holiday within the confines of the United Kingdom. Concerns over the H1N1 outbreak, coupled with the poor economy accounts for many in the crowd, as Britons look for ways to save money by taking a vacation in a more traditional places like Scarborough.
Occupancy rates in resorts and hotels in Scarborough have gotten a huge boost from this time last year, with some resorts reporting that they actually had to turn away customers, a problem which is good news for the slumping tourist industry. Usually the number of Britons taking holidays abroad is much higher, but this year the number is way down, with only 1 out of 5 people from the United Kingdom choosing to travel overseas.
“Our bookings have gone up by 600% in the last three years. By far the vast majority of our customers are from the UK, with many local to the region,” said Kerry Woodhead owner of Pinewood Holiday Park, which is a popular caravanning site near Scarborough.
With the travel industry down overall, these numbers represent good news as the United Kingdom desperately tries to crawl out of this economic recession.
