Amarante is a charming small town that is perched along the riverbanks of the Tamega. Dating back to the ancient times, modern Amarante is interesting for its history that began in 360 BC when the Turdetanos founded it and then prospered with the help of the Romans. You can still find vestiges of the past through the monuments and structures of the town that you can explore on your own.

Some of Amarante’s top attractions include the 18th century bridge and the festival known as the Festa de Sao Goncalo that takes place annually in June on its first Saturday and Sunday. Also worth seeing in town is the Sao Goncalo that dates back to 1540 and is distinct for its honey-gold appearance and well-painted interiors. You should also see the museum that is dedicated to the works and life of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, a cubist artist.

Amarante is small enough to be explored on foot but there is more to see beyond the town.
