The old citadel of Elvas sits in the east of the country not far from the border with Spain and mirroring the Spanish city of Badajoz for its fortifications. Elvas has tons of intriguing, ancient sights, including a massive castle and aqueduct, and also comes with cheap car hire at Elvas.

The star attraction is the huge 843-arch Amoreira Aqueduct which goes right through the town. It was started at the latter part of the 15th century and is an impressive sight both in and around the city. Parts of the aqueduct even go up to five arches high.

With car rental at Elvas you can also discern the ancient Elvas Castle, which is well maintained and affords fine vistas over the Alentejo landscape. Also in town are ancient churches, such as the octagonal Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, while large squares and winding streets also greet visitors. The real attraction of this area of eastern Portugal is the countryside, though. With car rental in Elvas, you can see many similar towns up and down the border with Spain, such as Forte de Santa Luzia and Forte de Graça.

Evora is in the other direction (west) with car hire in Elvas and has a similar aqueduct to Elvas as well as a bunch of high profile Roman ruins. Also be sure to see Evora Cathedral and the Bone Chapel which has walls built with human skulls.
