Nykoping is a place with a very rich history. This peaceful town has had a big part in altering the course of history for the country of Sweden. You see, in 1317, King Birger Jarl of Sweden had taken his two brothers as prisoner. They were plotting against him, both disputing his claim to the throne of Sweden. In a very bold move, he threw them into the dungeons and left them to starve. He also did it out of revenge for the sufferings they had caused him before. The incident thereafter was called the ‘Nykoping Banquet’ and it is an important chapter in the history of Sweden. If you want to learn more about the Nykoping Banquet or about the history of Sweden, you can go to the Nykopingshus Castle. This Castle is exactly where the Nykoping Banquet took place. It is open to the public and you can join some tour groups to see what it looks like inside. The exhibition about Nykoping’s history can be found in the King’s Tower. If you want to go to Nykopingshus Castle though, be sure to get a cheap car hire in Nykoping airport first so that you won’t have any trouble getting back to your hotel after your tour.
