Situated on top of the hill, the little village of San Miguel is known as the gateway to the rugged northern coast. Although all three major centres in Ibiza- Ibiza town, Santa Eulalia and San Antonio- are 25 minutes away, it is easy to access this village by bus or car hire at Ibiza- San Miguel.
The little old town appears imposing from its lofty position uphill. There is an ancient fortressed church built around the 14th- 18th centuries. During the summer in the modern-day San Miguel, it is the sight of nightly traditional shows staged by the locals. On Thursdays, Ibecencan storeowners open up shop at the village center to display locally produced goods. There is a wide variety of knick-knacks from homemade honey to pottery to watercolour paintings.
From the old town’s lofty position uphill is a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside all the way to Puerto San Miguel by the beach. A five- minute drive by car rental at Ibiza- San Miguel can be taken to this lovely little resort, which is accessible through San Miguel town alone.
Another interesting beach to visit is nearby Benirras beach, a well-known hippie hangout that features sunset drumming. If you avail of cheap car hire at Ibiza- San Miguel, it is simple enough to stop by Can Marca caves along the way. These 100,000-year old caves were once a hideout for smugglers but are now popular to adventuresome tourists.
