During the Peninsula War, Lisbon ordered the construction of a line of forts to protect it from attack and these forts were put up in the town of Torres Vedras. Car hire at Torres Vedras is popular with those looking to stay in the quiet town but travel out to see the old forts.
Although many of the forts are in a state of ruin they are still well worth visiting. There were hundreds built and they served their job brilliantly and some even claim that they are the best fort system to ever be used in a war. The town of Torres Vedras is quiet and peaceful and many visitors staying here will enjoy the tranquility it offers, especially in comparison to its large neighbour Lisbon.
