Voisins-le-Bretonneux is not a must-see when in Paris, but is a good alternative when wanting to be near to the Palace of Versailles as it is cheaper and certainly less hectic. Another good reason for visiting is its cheap car hire in Voisins.
The town is mid-sized to small and lies around 25kms to the southwest of Paris by bus. There is no direct metro access, although a railway station is about three kilometres away. The best airport for access it Paris’ southern Orly Airport. It is then worth picking up car rental at Voisins so you can better explore the area.
The expansive Palace of Versailles is definitely the big sight anywhere near Voisins and is best seen in the morning before the tourist hordes hit. You can get in with car hire in Voisins and then park up for a walking tour. The palace and grounds are extremely beautiful and sit in one of the most delectable parts of the northern Île-de-France region.
You also won’t have to drive far to get right out into the country as Voisins is flanked by forests and lakes to the south. They go practically most of the way to the showy town of Chartres to the southwest and, if you head this far, be sure to see its fantastic Gothic cathedral and ancient streets.
Farther afield again with car rental in Voisins is Orleans (to the south) of Joan of Arc fame, and the deep Fontainebleau Forest to the northeast of here.
