Portimao is located in the Algarve region, Portugal’s famous beach resort destination. Alvor is situated in the western area of town, around five kilometres west of the city’s centre. Car hire at Portimao/Alvor is without doubt the best way to travel the resort town. Portimao boasts a stunningly beautiful beach area which attracts visitors from all over Europe.

Portimao can be reached along the A22, which travels west-east across the Algarve region. The secondary highway, N125, can also access the city of Portimao and parish of Alvor. Lagos is another large city along the southern coast, and only sits about 12kms west of Portimao.

An abundance of hotels in Portimao can be found throughout the streets of the city. Alvor also has a large number on offer. Some offer car rental at Portimao/Alvor, but shuttle buses and public transport are available. The beach front area of Portimao is quite popular, hence, several famous beach resorts can be found in this area.

The city has one main train station located in the central area, but several others can be found in close proximity to the city. Portimao is also served by a small airport, from which cheap car hire at Portimao/Alvor can be accessed. There are several golf courses dotting the city, including Alto Golf Country Club, Penina Golf Course and Golfe de Morgado.

Several major attractions dot the city landscape of Portimao. Alvor Castle and Riverbank Zone are two of the most famous places to visit. In addition, guests can easily take a day trip further up the coast to some magnificent beaches, or travel inland to witness the majestic highland areas of the Algarve.
